Almonds
The almond tree, together with vines and olives, is one of the basic crops in the Matarraña/Matarranya region’s agricultural economy. It is more common in the northern part of the area, especially Valdeltormo, Valjunquera, Calaceite and Valderrobres, bringing a delicious colour and aroma to the land in flowering season.
The local varieties are ‘marcona’, considered the world’s highest quality almond; ‘largueta’, an elongated Spanish variety; and ‘guara’, ‘ferragnés’ and ‘ferranduel’ which tend to flower much later. Several typical pastries are produced with the almonds from this region, such as ‘secalls’, ‘atmellats’ and ‘rosquilles’.
