‘Ruta de los túmulos ibéricos’ hiking (Iberian mounds road)

Total distance (round trip): 5.62 km (straight track).

Height difference: 50.28 m

Access: A-1413 road, kilometre 8, between Calaceite and Cretas

This excursion offers the chance to discover and enjoy megalithic funeral monuments, 100 years after they were discovered by P. Bosch Gimpera, and to explore and remember the reality of funerary world in the 7th and 6th centuries B. C.

The mounds are circular-shaped burial sites dated from the first phases of Iberian culture. They are formed by a ‘cista’ or stone coffin, where ashes and offerings were placed and then covered by soil and stones. Such burial sites are typical of this region, with the characteristic positioning of the ‘cista’ in an eccentric position (outside of the centre of the mound).

The route leads along a path among millennial olive fields, cereals and almond trees, with ‘Puertos de Beceite’ providing forested backdrop. We can enjoy other cultural vestiges such as the cave paintings of ‘Mas d’en Jerra I’, the ancient Cavalry path between Cretas and Arens de Lledó, and ‘La Pedrafita’, which marks the municipal boundary between Arens de Lledó, Lledó and Cretas, as well as other constructions of a traditional nature.
