Welcome to Ráfales

A journey through time in Ráfales

Ráfales / Rafels, a genuine hidden gem in the Comarca del Matarraña, invites visitors on a fascinating tour through its thousand-year-old history. The oldest remains found in the area, such as flint arrowheads from the Chalcolithic period, speak to the presence of nomadic hunters and gatherers, laying the foundations of a rich and deep history.

After the Reconquest, Ráfales joined the influential Order of Calatrava, marking a crucial milestone in its development. In 1337 it was granted the prestigious status of a town, consolidating its importance in the region. The village has proudly preserved its traditions, notably its market, granted in 1382, which lives on today with the celebrated Feria de Recursos Naturales y Medio Ambiente every November.

The resilience of Ráfales has been tested over the centuries, facing turbulent episodes during the Carlist Wars and the Spanish Civil War. Yet its unbreakable spirit and wealth of heritage were recognised in 1983, when Ráfales was declared a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico, a testament to its cultural value and its enduring charm as a tourist destination.

Exploring Ráfales means immersing yourself in a mosaic of eras, where every street and every building tells part of its extraordinary story. From its prehistoric roots to its listing as a historic ensemble, Ráfales is an unmissable destination for lovers of history, culture and the beauty of the Matarraña.
