The Comarca del Matarraña, also known as Matarranya, is made up of 18 villages, each with its own charm: Arens de Lledó, Beceite, Calaceite, Cretas, Fórnoles, La Fresneda, Fuentespalda, Lledó, Mazaleón, Monroyo, Peñarroya de Tastavins, La Portellada, Ráfales, Torre de Arcas, Torre del Compte, Valdeltormo, Valderrobres and Valjunquera. Valderrobres stands out as the largest settlement and administrative capital of the comarca, while Calaceite is recognised as the cultural capital.

Located in the far north-east of the province of Teruel, in Aragon, the Matarraña region is characterised by its predominantly mountainous terrain, carved by the winding course of the Matarraña River. A Mediterranean climate prevails, though differences in altitude and a rugged relief create a continental effect that enriches its climatic diversity. The northern area is distinguished by a vibrant agricultural landscape, where olive trees, almond trees, peach trees and vineyards thrive, while the southern area, wilder in character, draws on the valuable forest resources of the Puertos de Beceite massif and the vast pine forests of Monroyo.

The cultural, historic-artistic and ethnographic heritage of the comarca is extraordinarily rich and spans architectural elements from many different eras. Levantine rock art stands out in particular, declared UNESCO World Heritage, with nine archaeological sites in the comarca that preserve artistic expressions left by the first inhabitants of the Matarraña River basin. From the Ibero-Roman period, significant Iberian settlements and a Roman necropolis have been preserved in the northern area.

The succession of architectural styles has left a deep imprint on the comarca, where visitors can admire fortifications and castles (chapel-gateways are a common feature), Levantine Gothic buildings, elegant Mannerist civic architecture and Baroque transformations expressed in hermitages, fountains, palaces and old mills.

The intangible cultural heritage of the Matarraña region is deeply rooted in its popular festivals, among which the moving celebration of San Antonio Abad stands out, along with age-old bell-ringing traditions and lively fairs held in most of its charming municipalities.
