Welcome to La Fresneda
Listed as a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (listed historic ensemble) since 1983, La Fresneda invites you to travel back in time through its heritage landmarks, such as the ruins of an Arab castle and the medieval church of Santa María la Mayor.
Its name first appears in 1169, when Alfonso II of Aragon conquered the valleys of the Algars River and the Matarraña River. In 1211 it came under the Order of Calatrava, and in 1283 Pedro II of Aragon granted it the title of Villa.
Civil power grew under the Catholic Monarchs, marking the construction of Renaissance monuments such as the town hall. The War of the Spanish Succession and the First Carlist War left their mark on our town, making it an essential stage in its development.
Located in the heart of the Matarraña region, La Fresneda is a living testament to Aragonese history and culture, with a legacy spanning from the Arab period to the Carlist Wars, all set within a landscape of great natural beauty.
