A symbol of the Baroque in La Fresneda
The Pilar Chapel, erected at the end of the 17th century, marks the beginning of a period of great Christian fervour and the height of the Baroque style in La Fresneda. This is reflected in the reconstruction and expansion of its most prominent religious buildings from that period and throughout the 18th century, including the parish church, the hermitage of the Virgen de Gracia and the hermitage of Santa Bárbara.
Historical location and architecture
Located in the old Sanctus square, today the Pilar square, this chapel probably replaced an earlier one dedicated to San Bartolomé. It is a solid Baroque structure, featuring a barrel vault and a transept, culminating in a dome supported by pendentives decorated in honour of the Virgin Mary.
The Aragonese portada-retablo: distinctive details
Its portal is a clear example of the Aragonese portada-retablo. Among its most outstanding elements are the robust main arch, the niche with the effigy of the Virgin and the coat of arms of the town with the ash tree, here accompanied by the monogram of the Ave Maria.

Today, the Pilar Chapel is used for the celebration of Sunday Mass. The parish church, due to its location in the upper part of the town and the difficulties of access, is reserved for special occasions and celebrations of greater significance. The Pilar Chapel suffered considerable damage to its interior decoration during the Spanish Civil War. As a result, a renovation of the polychrome work of its stuccoes had to be carried out in the years following the conflict. The façade has also experienced deterioration over the course of several wars and with the passage of time, but despite this, it still stands as a notable example of the characteristic Aragonese portada-retablo, distinguished by its curved profile and exquisite ornamentation.
