Discover Fórnoles, a municipality of the Matarraña with rugged terrain, pine forests and cultivated areas that create a landscape of great beauty. Explore its frontier history, its past linked to the Order of Calatrava since 1209, and its architectural splendour from the 16th to the 18th centuries, a symbol of prosperity and civic power.

Welcome to Fórnoles

Fórnoles/Fórnols, a gem of the Matarraña, is set in a natural environment characterised by rugged and irregular terrain, typical of a mountain landscape where dense pine forests and extensive cultivated areas predominate. This combination creates a striking landscape contrast of great beauty that invites exploration.

As befits a frontier land of great strategic importance in the Matarraña region, Fórnoles was formerly walled. After the conquest of the territory by the Aragonese monarchs, the town passed into the hands of the influential Order of Calatrava from 1209, a legacy that still resonates in its heritage.

It was, however, between the 16th and 18th centuries that Fórnoles experienced a remarkable architectural flowering. This period of economic prosperity and growing civic power left behind a rich collection of buildings that we can admire today. With a population of around 85 inhabitants (INE 2023), Fórnoles keeps its history and traditions alive in a serene and authentic setting.
