Parish church of Santa María la Mayor

The parish church of Santa María la Mayor in Fórnoles is a splendid example of religious architecture, where the Gothic and Baroque styles intertwine, revealing the different periods of its construction throughout history.

The construction of this temple began in the 14th century, between the years 1330 and 1350. From this first Gothic phase, the polygonal apse and the central nave survive, divided into four bays by pointed arches and covered with a ribbed vault. The central nave, higher than the lateral ones, is distinguished by an exterior cornice adorned with gargoyles and corbels, often carved with stylised human heads.

Have you noticed the heraldic shield on the pediment of the doorway? This emblem belongs to the Order of Calatrava. Its presence is a historical testimony, as during the initial construction of the church, Fórnoles was under the rule of this powerful religious-military order.

The 18th century marked a significant remodelling and extension in the Baroque style. During this stage, the two lateral naves were incorporated, housing shallow chapels, as well as the area at the foot of the church, where a singular hexagonal chapel with a false ribbed vault was erected. From this period also date the elegant bell tower and the main doorway, which, although sober, follows the aesthetic of the Baroque altarpiece-doorways.
