Welcome to Mazaleón

Mazaleón/Massalió: a historical legacy in the heart of the Matarraña region

Strategically situated in the Comarca del Matarraña, our town of Mazaleón (or Massalió in Catalan) has witnessed centuries of historical events, which have left their indelible mark on its streets and squares. At an altitude of 359 metres and covering an area of 86.25 km², Mazaleón is a destination that invites you to discover its rich heritage at every corner.

From its very origins, Mazaleón has been a strategic point, as evidenced by the pre-Iberian settlement of San Cristóbal, located less than a kilometre from the historic centre. This site connects us with the ancient civilisations that once inhabited these lands.

The Middle Ages and the subsequent early modern period left a profound mark. Visit the imposing church of Santa María la Mayor, whose origins date back to the 14th century. This Gothic building rises majestically at the top of the village, alongside the remains of the ancient castle towers, displaying a melting pot of architectural styles born from successive extensions throughout history.

In the heart of the village, the Plaza Mayor is home to the impressive 16th-century town hall and the perfectly preserved 18th-century jail. These buildings will transport you to the era when civil power finally broke free from religious authority in the Comarca del Matarraña, reflecting the political and social evolution of the town.

Explore the architectural charm of Mazaleón, letting yourself be drawn through the historic alleyways that wind through the town, lined with ashlar masonry houses that retain their traditional character and evoke stories of bygone days. Do not miss a stroll along the Ribera del Matarraña, a natural space where the diversity of flora and fauna invites you to connect with the surroundings.

Mazaleón is more than a destination; it is a journey through time, an invitation to immerse yourself in the history, culture and natural beauty of the Matarraña region.
