Residence of the chaplain: the Casa de la Abadía
The Casa de la Abadía is a building constructed to serve as the chaplain's residence. It adjoins the church along its outer perimeter on the south side. It stands at an elevated position in relation to the street, as it was built on the citadel's town wall. On its exterior facade, the staircase and landing leading to the entrance door are particularly noteworthy.
What original elements are preserved in the Casa de la Abadía and what history lies behind its gallery known as «lo Patarral»?
Inside the house, the original structure, the doors and a grand Castilian-style staircase with a Baroque ceiling have been preserved. Previously, it had a gallery with Tuscan arches, known as «lo Patarral», which connected the Abadía with the plaza del Llosat or de la Iglesia. Unfortunately, this gallery was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) when the images and altarpieces of the church were burned. After the war, the gallery was rebuilt using the same stones and columns, and incorporated into the facade of the current Parroquial club, which was built on the site where the Sacristan's house once stood.
The 18th century: architectural apogee in Mazaleón
The 18th century was a remarkable period for the monumental architecture of Mazaleón. It was during this prosperous period that the construction of this building took place, as can be seen in the door knocker dated 1773. In addition to this, other significant works were carried out in the village, such as the renovation of the town hall, the construction of the right nave of the church, the Casa de los Diezmos and several manor houses. Work on the hermitage of San Cristóbal and Santa Bárbara also resumed. It was a moment of architectural expansion and embellishment in Mazaleón.
