Town hall and jail of Fórnoles

The town hall of Fórnoles, an architectural gem of the 16th century, is far more than a simple administrative building. During a period of flourishing, it was built as a symbol of modernity and municipal power. It not only housed the decisions of the town council, but was the centre of public life in the village: a market, a meeting point, and even a place for leisure.

This building has witnessed the emancipation of Fórnoles. Despite later renovations, the ground floor remains a Renaissance gem with its original ashlar masonry and old jail. And as time passed, a tower with a clock was added to crown the building.

The construction of the town hall of Fórnoles is part of the architectural flourishing that took place in the comarca between the last quarter of the 16th century and the early 17th century, when town halls were built as symbols of modernity, economic prosperity and the growing power of civil municipal government.

These buildings combine artistic and utilitarian value. They were conceived as monumental works housing various functions of municipal public life: they served not only as the seat of town council meetings, the notary's office, municipal archives and jail, but also as a covered market, a place for relations between neighbours, and for leisure, etc.

When this building was constructed in the 16th century, Fórnoles was under the rule of the Order of Calatrava and was a hamlet of Peñarroya de Tastavins, from which it became independent in 1613, a few years after the completion of the works.

The ground floor preserves the original Renaissance structure: it is built with ashlar masonry walls and houses the lonja (porticoed hall) and the old jail. The upper floor, however, underwent later modifications, and the tower with the clock that crowns the building is a subsequent addition.

Located in the centre of the village, this building continues to serve as the seat of municipal government.

Today, the town hall of Fórnoles remains a beacon of municipal governance, a symbol of history and a vital part of community life. Like a living book of Fórnoles's history, every wall and every stone whisper the stories of times gone by, a monument that continues to mark the heart of the town.
