The Plaza Mayor of La Fresneda

The Plaza Mayor of La Fresneda is an essential component of the urban expansion that took place at the end of the Middle Ages, the result of the town's economic and demographic growth. It is truly unique in its design, as it has a triangular floor plan — an unusual feature for this type of public space — giving it an unmistakable character.

On its western side, the imposing 17th- and 18th-century stately mansions stand out, built in ashlar masonry with majestic façades, decorative doorways and galleries of round arches that reflect the prosperity of the era.

The eastern side of the square is adorned with the arcades connecting it to the Calle Mayor, a perfect testament to the medieval street plan of La Fresneda, preserving the essence of its past. At the base of the triangle stands the Casa Consistorial, a proud building that faces the square with its ceremonial façade, an enormous balcony, a clock and a coat of arms bearing the ash tree, the town's emblem, symbolising its identity and local government.

Finally, at the tip of the triangle stands the Arco de Xifré, an old town gate that served as the entrance to the town when it was surrounded by walls, a reminder of its defensive role and urban evolution.
