La Torreta de Ráfales
Explore this medieval tower, a defensive pillar of Ráfales that holds centuries of history and architectural evolution.
History and defensive function of La Torreta
La Torreta de Ráfales was a crucial element of the medieval walls that surrounded the village, offering protection to both the church and the castle situated within. This imposing tower defended one of the main entrances to the village, later identified as the Portal de San Roque. Its construction is estimated to have taken place between the 14th and 15th centuries, shortly after the building of the Calatrava Castle of Ráfales, which dates from the 14th century.
Architecture and materials
Characterised by its almost square plan and sparse openings to the outside, the Torreta clearly displays its defensive purpose. Nevertheless, a window in its upper section stands out, enlarged at a later stage when the roof was modified to incorporate the structure into a dwelling known as Casa l'Hereu (the heir's house).
Most of the Torreta's construction uses rubble masonry, a robust and common building method of the period. However, the corner adjoining the current town hall is built in ashlar masonry, which suggests that the municipal building was added later, during the 16th century, as part of the urban expansion of Ráfales. This distinction in building materials bears witness to the historical and urban evolution of the village.
Transformation and adaptation
After losing its original defensive function over time, the Torreta adapted to new uses, becoming an integral part of Casa l'Hereu. This transformation reflects the capacity of the historical buildings of the Matarraña to reinvent themselves and survive within the urban fabric of their villages.
Did you know…? La Torreta de Ráfales changed function over time
Originally a key defensive element of the 14th-15th century medieval walls, this tower was later incorporated into a dwelling, Casa l'Hereu, adapting its structure to become part of everyday life in Ráfales.
