Town hall of Ráfales

The Casa Consistorial of Ráfales holds a prominent position within the village and is of great significance from an urban planning perspective. It is built against the old town walls and stands over one of the village gateways. It also occupies a central position on the Plaza Mayor, serving as a meeting point between the square and the streets of the Castillo (which represents the oldest part of the village) and the Arrabal (which is a later urban expansion). It also stands close to one of the access gates to the municipality.

The construction of town halls across the comarca during the transition to the early modern period symbolised the growth of municipal power in a territory historically subject to seigneurial or ecclesiastical authority, as was the case of the Order of Calatrava in Ráfales. These buildings had a dual purpose: to serve as monuments reflecting the growing municipal authority and to provide spaces that met the new needs of local public life. Accordingly, the Casa Consistorial of Ráfales included a “lonja” (porticoed hall) on the ground floor, where the market was held, along with a jail, a town council meeting room, a notary's office and a municipal archive on the first floor, among other spaces.
