An ethnographic legacy in Ráfales
The washhouse of Ráfales is a rectangular construction that stands out for its two rubble masonry walls and the two stone-and-brick columns supporting its characteristic double-pitched roof. Located on the historic Calle Extramuros, to the south of Ráfales, in the province of Teruel, this washhouse was a hub for the community.
Functionality and traditional architecture
This washhouse has two separate washing troughs, designed for the different stages of doing laundry: washing and rinsing. Their edges, sloping inwards on three sides, made it easier to drain, and a metal spout ensured efficient drainage.
The building that shelters the troughs presents a rectangular structure with a double-pitched roof. The interior is finished with brick and cement, while the exterior features Arabic-style tiles, typical of the rural architecture of the Matarraña. Supported by stone-and-brick pillars, the washhouse remains open on most of its sides, which aids ventilation and access, blending harmoniously into its surroundings.

Beyond their practical function, the washhouse was an essential meeting point for the women of the village. Here news was shared, community bonds were forged and oral tradition was kept alive, making it a true social ‘heart’ of the locality.
