Jail of Ráfales: a journey into the past

The jail of Ráfales stands as a fascinating testimony to the past, being one of the best-preserved medieval jails in the Comarca del Matarraña. Its design shares notable similarities with the jail of La Fresneda, typical of old municipal premises. As was common at the time, this penal institution is strategically located on the ground floor of the town hall of Ráfales.

Access to this historic cell (dungeon) is through a sturdy wooden door with intricate ironwork, a detail that already hints at immersion in another era. After passing through it, narrow stairs descend to the cells. These are not conventional rooms but pits dug directly into the ground, designed to immobilise prisoners and which, in former times, were sealed with wooden beams at the top. This primitive method provided basic security and total confinement.

What makes the jail of Ráfales truly exceptional is its almost impeccably preserved condition. Unlike many other historic structures, it has not undergone significant renovations that alter its original design, making it possible to appreciate faithfully what a dungeon of the period was like. Located on the ground floor of the town hall, with an independent entrance, the jail is free to enter, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore this intriguing historical relic and immerse themselves in everyday life of old in the Matarraña.
