Discover the Portal de la Boira or de la Moneja in Ráfales

The Portal de Boira or de la Moneja was the main northern town gate of the old walls of Ráfales, serving as the vital point of access to the town. Much of the robust exterior rubble masonry walls and the characteristic round-arched entrance, with its perfectly preserved voussoirs, have survived in excellent condition from the original construction.

Over time, a dwelling was added above the gate, accessible from inside the town. This residential addition incorporates distinctive features of local traditional architecture, such as elegant wooden eaves, a carved wooden balustrade and a covered passage with wooden-beam ceilings, which lend the whole ensemble a unique charm.

In addition to the emblematic Portal de Boira, Ráfales is proud to preserve other historic gates that bear witness to its past, such as the Portal de la Villa and the Portal de San Roque. These architectural gems are fundamental to the historical richness of the locality.

Ráfales, like many settlements in the Matarraña region, was solidly walled during the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Although much of the original walls have disappeared, several elements remain that confirm its deep defensive history. Among these vestiges are the remains of the castle, a section of wall, a tower and the gates already mentioned. These elements are crucial for understanding the architectural heritage of Ráfales and offer a fascinating glimpse of its medieval past and the influence of the Order of Calatrava in the area.
