Route description
A beautiful route starting from the upper part of Torre de Arcas. We leave by the track running between an old fountain and a concrete block building. We soon reach the hermitage of San Bernardo, which we leave to our right. On the left, after about 1,000 m we reach the N-232 road (at km 89.5), which we cross carefully to enter a wooded area.
The vegetation becomes increasingly dense and varied with altitude. Holm oaks are plentiful in this area, soon giving way to pine forest. The ascent, always along a track, grows steadily steeper. When Torre de Arcas is about 4 km behind us, a PR marker indicates the track leading left towards Monroyo, and to the right towards the Sierra de la Cogulla and the Fuente de la Mançana spring.
In the third section of the route, the presence of black pine tells us we are now above the 1,000 m mark. We continue to climb and soon find the turn-off on the left that leads to the Fuente de la Mançana spring. The spring, located beside a small stone hut, is presided over by a large walnut tree and the biggest pine in the Monroyo municipal area — 2.55 m in circumference — known as "lo pi de la font de la Mançana".
We return from the spring to the main track to tackle the final climb, which will test our fitness. At the summit of the Sierra de la Cogulla, the bird's-eye view from the Punta de la Camiseta is undoubtedly worth all the effort. We can enjoy beautiful panoramas of the comarcas of Matarraña (Teruel) and Els Ports (Castellón), on the border of which this iconic peak stands.
