Hermitage of Santa Bárbara in Valjunquera

The hermitage of Santa Bárbara in Valjunquera is an emblematic point of interest, standing out as the oldest of the two hermitages in the village. Its privileged location on a hill offers visitors an impressive panoramic view of the entire municipality, combining architectural beauty with the natural splendour of the Matarraña region.

This modest but significant building reveals a fascinating contrast: a Renaissance style on its exterior, complemented by rich elements and Baroque decoration inside. Its rectangular floor plan ends in a straight-ended chancel, characteristic of the period in which it was built.

At the foot end, a distinctive entrance porch welcomes visitors, with a round arch defining two of its walls. The third wall preserves a fragment of its past history: the lintel that was once the doorway to the hermit's house, attached to the main building. Today, of that dwelling only this opening survives, along with a channel carved directly into the rock, silent witnesses to lives gone by.
