Plaza de España

Throughout Valderrobres, there are countless spots where history whispers the chapters of our past to us. But few of those spots have maintained as constant a presence as the village square.

Although its most iconic building is undoubtedly the town hall, the other buildings that make it up are no less worthy of historical interest.

The so-called “Fonda de la Plaza” is an ancient building already standing in the 14th century. It began as the building used for tax collection, a function it retained until 1545, when the “Palau” was completed to take over that role, and the future Fonda building became the house of the justice and the notaries. In the end, the inn function is the one it has served longest and, despite passing through many different owners, it has remained in operation to this day.

Continuing around the square, we come across the so-called “Casa Pereret”, a splendid five-storey building on whose façade you can see a family coat of arms and a solid balcony with curved corbels. Opposite stands “Casa Pallarés”, another imposing family building that connects with the stairway of “el Pelleric”, which takes you into the very heart of the oldest part of Valderrobres.

Opposite the town hall stands the “Pensión Moderna”, a multipurpose building that opened in 1925 as a luxury guest house and whose use has changed over the years, at one point even serving as the telephone exchange.

These and other buildings have shaped and continue to shape the true heart of Valderrobres, its Square, a testament to its history and the vital hub in the life of the people of Valderrobres — past, present and future.
