Ermita de los Santos

The hermitage of los Santos, dedicated to San Abdón and San Senén, is a building with a history that dates back to approximately 1420, although its precise date of origin is a matter of debate. Architecturally, it presents a challenging classification due to the numerous reconstructions it has undergone over the centuries as a result of collapses. A key date carved on its façade, 1685, suggests the addition of the adjoining house intended for the hermit during that period.

The figure of the hermit was fundamental to the life of the hermitage and the surrounding community. He not only took care of the upkeep of the chapel, but also assumed the important task of educating the children from the neighbouring mas, teaching them to read and write. His responsibilities also included ringing the bell, both to warn of storms and to mark the hours of the day, a tradition that endured well into the 1930s.

Today, the most important day for the hermitage of los Santos is 19 August. On this date, the residents of Valderrobres gather for a large pilgrimage. This festive event includes a picnic and traditional games, deeply rooted in local culture. The hermitage continues to be a vibrant meeting point, symbolising the endurance of traditions and the strong community of Valderrobres.
