Valderrobres jail

The jail is located on the basement floor of the town hall (casa consistorial) of Valderrobres. The building's significance was recognised on 24 July 1982, when it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural.

Dated to the late 16th century. An inscription preserved on the coat of arms of the main façade of the town hall refers to 1599, a date associated with the completion of its original construction.

The old jail of Valderrobres town hall is reached from the great "lonja" (porticoed hall) that presides over its ground floor.

The Valderrobres jail was the only "district" jail in the Matarraña basin during the 19th century, and it must have been used frequently during the Carlist Wars. The town hall building must have had several cells (dungeons), especially on the ground floor and in the basement; today only the latter is preserved and can be visited. In Valderrobres there was another important jail or prison space in its great castle. The latter's dependence on the archbishopric of Zaragoza explains why it was used to hold members of the clergy.

The town hall (casa consistorial) of Valderrobres is a masterpiece of architecture built in the late 16th century. It rises majestically on the square that gives access to the medieval fortification, standing as an outstanding example of Renaissance architecture in the Bajo Aragón (Lower Aragon) and Matarraña region, sharing parallels with historic buildings in Alcañiz, La Fresneda and Torre del Compte.

The building is arranged over three main floors and boasts three exposed façades. On the ground floor, an impressive "lonja" (porticoed hall) with round arches bears witness to its former role as a vibrant public space. Inside, vestiges of what is believed to have been a prison cell are preserved. Going down a flight of stairs, you reach the old jail, whose sturdy doors and bars remain intact, offering a journey into the past.

The main floor (piano nobile) displays a particular elegance, standing out for three openings masterfully decorated with pilasters and pediments on its main façade. Two of these openings are joined by an exquisite wrought-iron balcony, while the third reveals intriguing paintings of political content dating back to the 19th century.

The upper floor, separated by a decorated imposta, houses a classical gallery with small round arches that extend across its three façades. The ensemble culminates in carved wooden eaves of exceptional beauty, adorned with profuse stylised plant decoration that enhances the sophistication of this remarkable structure.

The uniqueness of this building did not go unnoticed; in 1924, it was chosen by the creators of the Pueblo Español in Barcelona to preside over its main square, immortalising its design. In addition, its historical and architectural value was officially recognised in 1982, when it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Spanish heritage listing), consolidating its status as essential heritage of Aragon and the Matarraña region.
