A journey into the past: life at the Matarraña washhouses
Until the early 20th century, it was a common sight in the villages along the Matarraña River to see women going down to the river to wash clothes and other items. To make this task easier and improve conditions, Valderrobres town hall took the initiative in 1931 to build three municipal washhouses. These not only offered a more comfortable space for doing the laundry, but also included a section dedicated to washing crockery and a drinking trough for animals.
The water essential for these tasks came directly from the Acequia Mayor of the Matarraña River, an ancient canal of some 5 kilometres that ran along the right bank of the river. These washhouses became crucial meeting points for the women of the community, where, beyond the laundry, they shared news and forged social bonds.
What is the current legacy of the Old Washhouses of Valderrobres?
Despite having withstood several floods and the passage of time, technological advances have relegated these washhouses to occasional or even obsolete use in modern life. They still stand beside the Matarraña River, however, reminding us of a not so distant past and preserving the memory of an important tradition in the life of these villages.
