Plaza de España, the heart of Valdeltormo

The Plaza de España has been the epicentre of life in Valdeltormo, bearing different names throughout the centuries. Originally known as the «plaza de la Cruz», it probably housed a cross marking the centre of the town, before being named «plaza Mayor» in the middle of the last century. This space is more than a place; it is a compendium of local identity and a meeting point.

Since the summer of 2006, the Plaza de España has housed the town hall offices inside the emblematic «Casa del Queretá o del Negre». However, this building has had a fascinating history of varied uses: it was a school, a café, the headquarters of the Sindicato, a barracks for the Guardia Civil during the maquis era, and even housed a tavern, a shop and a butcher's. A true architectural time capsule reflecting the social evolution of the village. In its basements, moreover, lies the Iberian Culture Museum of Valdeltormo, an archaeological treasure of great value.

Traditionally, the Plaza de España has been the main stage for all popular events during the August festivities: dances, greasy poles, opening speeches, competitions, fireworks, fire bulls and bullfights. It was the beating heart of celebration and community life. Recently, the old concrete floor has been replaced by rustic stone, giving the village centre a renewed appearance more in keeping with its heritage. A distinctive feature of this renovation is the coat of arms of Valdeltormo, engraved in stone and set into the new paving, a permanent symbol of local identity.
