Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Valdeltormo

Until the early 15th century, the residents of Valdeltormo had to travel to the nearby town of Valjunquera to attend religious services. For this reason, in 1407 the residents of the town asked Pope Luna (Benedict XIII) to have their own vicar, arguing that they had a church with everything necessary, a baptistery and a cemetery. The Pope granted their request that same year.

Over time, that original temple must have proved insufficient and in the 17th century, when the population had around 200 inhabitants — almost double that of the 15th century — the construction of this new temple was decided.

The current building is a Baroque work with a rectangular floor plan dated 1698. The main nave, with a barrel vault, was built first and subsequently another nave with a sail vault was added on the Epistle side. To the left of the central nave, there are three side chapels making use of the space between the buttresses. The naves have five bays, the last of which corresponds to the chancel. The temple is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, as the patron of the church was the brotherhood (cofradía) of this invocation.

The old altars disappeared during the Spanish Civil War, when the church was used as a warehouse by the anarcho-syndicalist collectivisation (the town was one of the 18 settlements that made up the Valderrobres district) and a door was opened in the wall of the Plaza Mayor for lorries to enter, which is now bricked up.
