The Old Town Hall of Valdeltormo: Heart of the Renaissance administration

The Old Town Hall of Valdeltormo stands as a valuable example of Renaissance civil architecture, common in the villages of the Matarraña during the early modern period. Its construction, completed in 1584, bears witness to the rich administrative and social history of the locality.

Initially, the building did not operate as a town hall in today's strict sense, but as the seat of the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. This brotherhood carried out crucial administrative functions for the population, covering both civil and religious aspects. During this period, Valdeltormo was part of the domains of the Encomienda de Calatrava de Alcañiz.

The Brotherhood was the cornerstone of communal organisation. It was responsible for convening an annual general assembly where all residents took part in decision-making. During these assemblies, communal meals were held, the brotherhood's accounts and assets were reviewed, and the representatives of the municipal government — the prior, two majorals and other auxiliary officers — were elected by vote. It was a model of local participation and self-governance.

A fundamental milestone in the history of Valdeltormo and this building occurred in 1629. Thanks to the recognition granted by King Felipe IV, Valdeltormo ceased to be a village dependent on Alcañiz and became a fully independent municipality, with its own jurisdiction. It was then that this building officially assumed the functions of its own town hall, consolidating local autonomy.
