Discover the Portal de les Creus

The presence of walls in the comarca's settlements is a notable aspect of the local architectural heritage. Although only remnants of these ancient fortifications survive today, their influence on the shaping of the urban structure of the region's towns and villages has been significant.

One of the most notable elements related to these walls is the town gates, such as the one known as the "Portal de les Creus" (Gate of the Crosses), located at the southern end of Torre del Compte. This town gate is the only one to have survived from the set of six that once formed part of this village's walls. Of the other gates, only remnants of the "Portal del Roig" or de la Bassa remain, which was demolished in the 1970s in the 20th century to allow vehicle access to the village. Some of the pieces of this gate were reused as decorative elements in the garden in front of the walls.

The "Portal de les Creus" features a round arch with large voussoirs set into the rubble masonry wall. This town gate is crowned by seven merlons, one of which displays the village coat of arms. This entrance to the ancient walls offers an impressive panoramic view of the village and the surrounding landscape, which enhances its historical value and tourist appeal.
