Hermitage of San Juan

The hermitages of the Matarraña region not only hold a profound religious value, but also represent a fundamental piece of the local architectural and artistic heritage. They often serve as vibrant social gathering places during the traditional romerías, weaving community bonds that endure over time.

The hermitage of San Juan, set on the picturesque outskirts of Torre del Compte, is a magnificent example of the region's religious architecture. This imposing construction, dating from the Gothic-Renaissance style, stands in an idyllic setting, flanked by majestic centuries-old cypress trees that line the approach and enhance its solemnity.

The structure of the hermitage is characterised by a single nave, crowned by an elegant ribbed vault that brings lightness and height to the interior. The apse, of polygonal configuration, adds complexity and distinction to the overall design. The façade, of clear Renaissance character, is a historical testament with inscriptions revealing the date of completion: 1609.

Externally, the hermitage stands out for its solid buttresses, elements that not only fulfil a vital structural role but also contribute to the sobriety and robustness of its appearance. The apse, for its part, presents an elegant austerity, punctuated only by two small splayed windows on its sides, which allow a faint and mystical light to enter. In the vicinity of this sacred place, the old hermit's house is preserved, a vestige that speaks of a life devoted to worship and the care of the temple.

The hermitage of San Juan is a focal point for the community life of Torre del Compte, especially during the celebration of its traditional romería in honour of San Juan. Originally, this festivity took place on 24 June, the feast day of San Juan Bautista. However, nowadays the romería is held on the Saturday closest to this date, to allow greater participation by local residents.

The romería day is a vibrant event: in the afternoon, the surroundings of the hermitage are transformed into a lively space with a celebration and dancing that brings the community together. These festivities and romerías are not mere religious acts; they are powerful catalysts that foster gathering, socialising and the celebration of the rich religious and cultural heritage of Torre del Compte, keeping alive the ancestral traditions of the Matarraña region.
