Torre del Compte Prison

Former prison integrated into one of the most beautiful town halls in Matarraña, completed in 1574.

Site

The Torre del Compte prison is located on the ground floor of the town hall. It is a magnificent building situated on a plot very close to the town's main square. Its main façade, built of ashlar stone, is structured in three sections. On the ground floor, there is a large loggia, defined by semicircular arches resting on octagonal columns. On the first floor, three large lintelled windows with triangular pediments open, and on the upper floor, there is a gallery of semicircular arches. A beautiful stone cornice crowns the façade, adorned with large gargoyles representing various animals and a female figure.

Chronology

The prison was built in the town hall of the town, a work completed in 1574, a date that is preserved on its facade.

Description

The prison is structured into three interconnected rooms or spaces, linked by simple lintelled doorways. The first was used as the jailer's residence, and the other two as cells. The largest room, with a small barred window to the outside, is the jailer's. The cells are small, less than 5 square meters. They are accessed through a lintelled opening where a large stone block serves as the lintel.

The first room connects to the outside through a small square window, closed with a grille and external wire mesh, which overlooks the market hall. All three rooms have very low vaulted masonry ceilings and earthen floors. A ring embedded in one of the corners of the inner dungeon remains. Next to the opening that connects the jailer's room to the first dungeon, there is a small loophole for monitoring the interior.

It is not open to visitors.

Torre del Compte prison is currently not open to the public. Its heritage value can be appreciated from outside the town hall building.

Practical information

The prison is not currently open to visitors. The town hall building that houses it, completed in 1574, can be seen from the market square and the main square.
