Discover the rich history and impressive Renaissance architecture of the administrative heart of Torre del Compte, a 16th-century legacy that remains alive today, also housing an ethnological centre.
The town halls of the Matarraña region and Bajo Aragón (Lower Aragon) are notable examples of the close relationship between function and form in architecture. These buildings, constructed in the second half of the 16th century and the early 17th, served as centres of essential activities for the collective life of local communities. They were not only places where town council meetings were held, but also fulfilled diverse roles: spaces for relations between neighbours, covered markets, places of entertainment and, in some cases, even jails.
The town hall of Torre del Compte, completed in 1574, is a notable example of this Renaissance architecture. The building was constructed with ashlar masonry on the exterior and rubble masonry on the interior. It features notable architectural elements, such as the frontones triangulares that crown the windows of the main floor (piano nobile) and three gargoyles with representations combining aggressive and unsettling elements. These gargoyles are an example of medieval sculptural decoration preserved in Renaissance architecture in Aragon in only a very few cases.
It is worth noting that these historic town halls continue to house the functions of municipal administration today, and have been adapted to showcase aspects of local history and culture, as in the case of the ethnological centre in the town hall of Torre del Compte. These buildings represent a valuable architectural and cultural heritage that connects the past with the present of local communities.

The ethnological centre is a space dedicated to the conservation and dissemination of the intangible and material heritage of the locality, offering a deep insight into rural life in the Matarraña region.
The building, completed in 1574, is distinguished by its construction in ashlar masonry on the exterior and rubble masonry on the interior. Particularly noteworthy are the frontones triangulares above the windows of the main floor (piano nobile) and three singular gargoyles reflecting a medieval sculptural style rare in Aragonese Renaissance architecture. This design underlines its historical and cultural significance.
