Medieval bridge of Torre de Arcas

The majestic bridge rising over the gorge of Torre de Arcas is a structure that transports us to bygone eras, with origins that probably date back to the medieval period or even earlier. This vital structure not only provides passage over the gorge, but also formed part of an ancient route of great importance, strategically linking Monroyo with Zorita, in the neighbouring comarca of "dels Ports".

Architecturally, the bridge is distinguished by its single round arch, meticulously built with robust ashlar stone blocks. Its interior is reinforced with rubble masonry, and the roadway, slightly pointed, retains its original cobblestone surface. On both sides, solid protective walls, also in stone, ensure its integrity and that of those who cross it.

One of the most singular and enchanting features of this bridge is that it houses within one of its bases the venerable Font Vella. This natural spring, accessible through an opening of bóveda de medio cañón and stairs descending to water level, was for centuries the water supply point for the inhabitants of the area, before running water reached homes. In earlier times, a waterwheel (noria) was even used inside to facilitate extraction of the precious liquid.

The gorge of Torre de Arcas, which the bridge spans, flows into the Bergantes River, whose source lies in the Castellón comarca of "dels Ports". At the spectacular confluence of this gorge with the river, nature offers an impressive waterfall known as the "Xorrador", a natural setting of unparalleled beauty well worth a visit.
