Parish church of San Bernardo

The church of San Bernardo in the municipality of Torres de Arcas has its earliest documentary references in a document called «Rationes decimarum» dated to the year 1280. However, the construction of the current building did not begin until three centuries later.

This temple, in the Renaissance-Baroque style, is dedicated to San Bernardo and was built in several phases, with most of the work carried out in the 17th century. The tower and the portal, bearing the date of 1595, date from the end of the previous century.

The church is built in ashlar masonry and rubble masonry and has a rectangular plan. It consists of a nave with four bays covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. Lateral chapels open between the buttresses, the most notable being the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dating from 1834 and the only one to retain its original decoration and religious imagery. The rest of the decoration and the main altarpiece in the Baroque style were destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
