Town hall and jail of Torre de Arcas

Simple 17th-century town hall (casa consistorial), with a "lonja" (porticoed hall), a jail and the mark of Torre de Arcas's emancipation process in 1791.

Origin and functions

The town hall (casa consistorial) of Torre de Arcas was built in the early 17th century, following the typical design of town halls in the comarca. This building served various functions: it housed Council meetings, served as a gathering place for residents, included a jail and, in its "lonja" (porticoed hall), hosted the local market.

Architecture and renovations

From an architectural point of view, it is a simple construction, which may be due to the fact that Torre de Arcas did not become an independent municipality until 1791, when King Charles IV granted its separation from Monroyo. Despite this date, the settlement had existed much earlier, even during the period of Arab rule.

The original building had two floors and a "lonja" (porticoed hall) with a flat-beam ceiling. However, its current exterior appearance differs from the original due to a renovation carried out in the mid-20th century, in which the first floor was rebuilt and the original materials replaced with face bricks forming decorative patterns through variations in their arrangement.

The jail

The jail, which forms part of the Ruta de las Cárceles del Mezquín-Matarraña, is located on the ground floor of the building and had a single small window fitted with a wrought-iron grille for ventilation.
