Route description
The Pena reservoir — on the course of the Pena river — has become an inseparable part of the natural landscape of the Matarraña comarca.
Construction began in 1909, flooding several of the farmsteads that dotted the area; the work was completed in 1930. The dam stands 41 metres high and 119 metres long, covers 129 hectares and has a capacity of 18,500,000 cubic metres. It takes its name from the river, the Pena, which in turn takes its name from the surrounding mountain, la Caixa, historically known as Peña Aznar Lagaia. Its use is primarily agricultural.
It lies at the foot of the Puertos de Beceite and, although there are several access routes, the best-maintained are the asphalted track from Beceite and the track branching off the A-1414 road between Fuentespalda and Valderrobres. These are the best options if travelling by car.
The cycling route starts from the dam at the sluice gate and goes as far as the Pena river; the one-way distance is 4.53 km and the difficulty is low.
