Rocas del Masmut
The Rocas del Masmut, imposing stone walls crowned by soaring vultures, offer one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Matarraña region.
Description
The Peñas del Masmut are an imposing conglomerate rock massif that rises alongside Peñarroya de Tastavins. Its vertical walls are home to a significant colony of griffon vultures, whose flight crowns one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Matarraña region.
You can circumnavigate the massif by following the circular route «Vuelta a las Rocas del Masmut», which starts from the calle del Sol, next to the plaza de la Iglesia.
The route is circular, going around the rocky massif of the Peñas del Masmut; the starting point is on the calle del Sol, which begins at the plaza de la Iglesia. It starts along the Vallibona track, along which every seven years the pilgrimage arriving from that town in Castellón province is received. You pass through an area of small rock shelters and constructions built into the rock, which were used to shelter various livestock. A few metres along, a fork to the left leads to the 'Parque aragonés de la vivienda en el medio rural', with recreations of various constructions from the past.
The Rocas del Masmut are one of the symbols of Peñarroya de Tastavins, and the source of countless references, poems and legends. This is an impressive monolith with vertical walls more than one hundred metres high, with different shapes and perspectives on the north face and the south face. Its altitude stands at 1,058 metres. It was formed in the Palaeogene from the first eroded materials of the mountain massif, made up of conglomerates, sandstones and clays.
Its name may derive from the place name 'Masmuda', a Berber tribe from Morocco that is thought to have settled in this territory during the Arab occupation.
On the north-west side of the rocks there is a significant vulture colony. From the summit of these rocks you can take in the spectacular beauty of the surrounding landscape. On the south face there are climbing routes of more than 150 metres.
