The mysterious Pont Xafat of Peñarroya de Tastavins

A unique geographical feature with a history, strategically located at the foot of the Tossal de la Mola, revealing clues about the defensive past of the town.

Origin and function of the Pont Xafat

The town of Peñarroya de Tastavins, nestled at the foot of the imposing Tossal de la Mola, conceals in its origins a fascinating history linked to its ancient castle. Just at the end of this defensive structure, nature carved out a wide and deep gash, known today as the «Pont Xafat».

This unique formation may have played a crucial role in the defence of the castle, perhaps functioning as a natural drawbridge or as a formidable defensive trench, blocking access to the fortress. Its remains still bear witness today to the presence of that ancient building which marked the birth of the settlement.

Did you know…? The Pont Xafat marked the expansion of Peñarroya

The settlement of Peñarroya de Tastavins originally formed around its castle and the Pont Xafat. Over time, the population gradually moved down from the mountain to the plain, surpassing the original limits of the town walls and shaping the current urban expansion and development of the municipality, from the Tossal de la Mola down to the valley plain.
