Hermitage of San Llambert

The hermitage of San Llambert is strategically located in the southern area of the municipality of Peñarroya de Tastavins, specifically in the locality known as l'Escresola. This monument, whose original construction dates to 1327, is a clear example of the popular religious architecture of the comarca. It consists of a single nave built in rubble masonry, which was carefully whitewashed at a later date, giving it its characteristic appearance. Its simple design and doorway with a round arch reflect a humble character deeply rooted in local tradition. On the right-hand façade of the hermitage, buttresses are visible that were added at a date after its initial construction, reinforcing its structure over the centuries.

The hermitage is not only a point of architectural interest but also the heart of a deeply rooted tradition. During the 18th century, a brotherhood (cofradía) dedicated to San Lamberto was founded, whose stewards (mayoralías) were responsible for organising an annual feast and a moving pilgrimage in honour of this saint. This venerable custom has endured to the present day, celebrated with devotion on the Sunday closest to 19 June. During this festivity, the community of Peñarroya de Tastavins gathers to take part in a solemn mass, the traditional blessing of the land, and finally to enjoy a popular meal that fosters togetherness and community spirit.
