The Old Jail of Peñarroya de Tastavins

A window into the judicial past of the Matarraña region, located in the town hall (casa consistorial).

Structure and features of the jail

The jail or prison complex of Peñarroya de Tastavins is structured into three interconnected rooms. The first of these rooms was used as the jailer's dwelling, while the two remaining ones served as cells. The last of these cells has a narrow and tight access, reached through a passage carved into the rock. The entrance to this cell features a door with a conopial arch design on the intrados.

The first room communicates with the outside through a simple square window fitted with a sturdy iron bar grille. All three rooms are covered with ashlar masonry vaults, the floor is of bare earth, and the walls are built of rubble masonry. Inside the jail, some graffiti are preserved on the jambs and lintel of the doorway leading to the first cell. An iron ring is also preserved in the inner cell, which was probably used to chain prisoners.

Did you know that the old jail is integrated into a municipal building?

This jail is located in the town hall (casa consistorial) of Peñarroya de Tastavins, on the ground floor of the building. Despite the alterations it has undergone over time, this structure still preserves elements of interest, such as a beautiful window on its main floor (piano nobile) and, as previously mentioned, the old jail.

Location and architectural integration

The distinctive feature of the jail of Peñarroya de Tastavins lies in its integration within the town hall (casa consistorial). Located on the ground floor of the municipal building, it offers a unique perspective on how judicial and administrative functions coexisted in the same space throughout history. Despite renovations, the building has managed to preserve architectural elements of interest, including a window on the main floor and the prison structure itself, reflecting the evolution of the local heritage.
