Christmas in the Matarraña preserves several folk traditions that close the festive cycle of the year.
Tronc de Nadal
On Christmas Eve, in villages such as Mazaleón and Calaceite, the adults bring a log into the house which, once hollowed out, is filled with sweets and gifts. The children beat it with sticks so that it «expels» the sweets and toys inside, a tradition of Catalan-Aragonese origin that shares roots with the Pyrenean «tió de Nadal».
Los Calderones
On 5 January, in La Fresneda, children walk through the streets of the village dragging noisy objects tied to a rope. They make as much noise as they can to make sure the Three Wise Men do not forget their house.
