Parish church of the Assumption of Monroyo

The parish church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Monroyo is a living testament to architectural evolution. The current building is the result of a major reform of the original Gothic structure from the 13th century. This transformation took place in the 16th century, with details added later that enrich it stylistically.

In architectural terms, the church presents a fascinating mix of styles. Its façade and general structure display clear Renaissance elements, the fruit of the 16th-century reform. However, its interior surprises with the addition of Baroque and Neoclassical details, incorporated in subsequent transformations, creating a harmonious and visually interesting ensemble.

The floor plan is organised into three naves, with the central nave extending to a polygonal apse. This main nave is covered by an elegant barrel vault with lunettes, a distinctive feature of the Baroque style that lends it great solemnity. The bell tower, with its three tiers and square plan, has a notable historical particularity: it was left unfinished due to the death of its original builder. Fortunately, it has undergone meticulous restoration in recent years, recovering its splendour.

An interesting historical detail is that the buttress on which the tower rests at its rear formed part of an old town gate of the village walls. This integration with the original defences of the village underlines the strategic importance of its location. Adjacent to the church stands the old cemetery, inviting reflection on Monroyo's past.
