Parish church of Santiago Apóstol de Lledó

In the distant year of 1210, Lledó was established as a "castle and town" thanks to the generous charter of settlement granted by the bishop of Tortosa. Displaying the grace of Levantine Gothic art, this church, built in the first half of the 14th century, is structured around a single nave with a rectangular plan and four side chapels, two on each side, which show the new Renaissance style. The pointed doorway and the Gothic window, true decorative gems in the Gothic style, are the most ornate elements of this temple, which stands out for its austerity throughout the rest of its construction. Remarkably, the temple defies the structural systems of Gothic art by lacking the typical buttresses on the sides of the building, where only one of its chapels projects outward.

This sturdy construction with thick ashlar walls and little interior light resembles, like that of the neighbouring village of Arens de Lledó, a church-fortress. The narrow protective windows of the tower bear witness to this. To the left of the façade there is a polygonal tower-like structure housing the spiral staircase that leads to the choir and the bell tower. On the right side stands the bell gable, which is a later addition. This temple survived the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, having been dismantled. In 2001, it was finally recognised as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Spanish heritage listing), a beacon of historical heritage.

Worthy of note is the viewpoint located on the square in front of the church, from which the majestic Puertos de Beceite massif can be seen. A mountain range that gives our territory a special microclimate for the cultivation of vineyards, olive groves, peach orchards, almond trees, cereal crops, etc. This landscape, with its excellent forests and cultivated fields, can be appreciated even better from another of our viewpoints: the "maset del señor Isidro", with a 360° panorama. Standing out from these views are "les Roques de Benet" and the Algars River with its crystal-clear waters, the delight of all who wish to take a dip in the "Azud de Lledó", a natural bathing spot where sunbathing on flat rocks is a pleasure in the heart of nature.
