Town hall of La Portellada

At the beginning of the 17th century a building was erected bearing the date 1622 inscribed on its façade. Originally it was the Casa de la Cofradía de San Cosme y San Damián, which played a crucial role in the economic, social and political administration of the village, as La Portellada was then a district of La Fresneda. However, with the arrival of the early modern period, a growth in civil power at the expense of ecclesiastical power in municipal organisation became apparent. A notable change took place between the second half of the 16th century and the early 17th century, marked by the construction of monumental town halls throughout the comarca.

This architectural gem displays a Renaissance style and is characterised by its walls of ashlar masonry. Its structure follows the typical pattern of other town halls in the comarca: the ground floor, with its "lonja" (porticoed hall) and jail; the main floor (piano nobile) on the first floor; and a second floor with a gallery of round arch windows.

To this day, the building remains the centre of the administrative and political representation tasks of the population. In 1982, it was rightly declared Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Spanish heritage listing), an exceptional witness to the history and legacy of the region.
