Jail of La Fresneda

Several jails were built in La Fresneda, all of them open to visitors. The first is located in the calle Mayor of the town, next to the town hall. Although it requires some conservation work, it is in good condition and retains a room with a barred window that is believed to have been the jailer's house.

From this dungeon, a masonry staircase leads up to a mezzanine connected by a small but thick wooden door to a well seven metres deep. The well is divided into two levels separated by an ashlar masonry cover with a hole at the bottom to access the lower area. It was here that prisoners were confined, which gives an idea of the difficult conditions they had to endure.

Inside the town hall of La Fresneda there is another of the town's jails. This cell occupies the ground floor and has been recently restored, and is in perfect condition. It is believed to be even older than the one in the calle Mayor. Inside, hundreds of drawings, engravings and inscriptions are preserved on the floor and walls, as well as the original latrines.
