Town gate and chapel of San Antonio: history and devotion

The town gates that flanked the medieval walls of the Comarca del Matarraña are unique architectural elements, vestiges of a past where defence was paramount. Over time, in the 18th century, these imposing entrances acquired a new religious dimension when Baroque-style chapels were built above them. This fusion created hybrid structures that combine the original defensive function with a deep religious vocation.

In Fuentespalda, the medieval walls that once protected the town had four access gates. Of these, fortunately, two impressive examples have been preserved: the one we are concerned with here, the town gate and chapel of San Antonio, and the nearby town gate and chapel of San Francisco. The other two gates disappeared over the centuries; one of them, it is believed, may have housed the chapel of the Virgin of Carmen, whose remains are now integrated into a wall.

The gate opens majestically with two round arches, structures dating from the medieval period. It was in 1789 that, on this defensive base, the chapel dedicated to San Antonio de Padua was built. The main facade of the chapel is a notable element, with a wide balcony featuring a round arch, rebuilt in brick in 1988 to preserve its original appearance. Inside, the roof rises to form a hemispherical dome, a Baroque detail that lends the space an atmosphere of contemplation and beauty.

This place is not only a monument of historical and artistic value, but also a centre of deep-rooted traditions. Until relatively recently, the chapel took on a special life every 13 June, the feast day of San Antonio. During the nine days leading up to this celebration, it was a deeply ingrained custom to recite the novena and sing the gozos at this beautiful spot, combining religious devotion with the preservation of the valuable historical and cultural heritage of Fuentespalda.
