La Torreta de Fuentespalda

La Torreta de Fuentespalda is an imposing watchtower that, originally, formed an integral part of the walls that protected the town. In this same area, two town gates have been ingeniously converted into open chapels, adding a touch of spirituality to the defensive legacy of the place.

It is estimated that the construction of La Torreta took place in the Christian era, following the conquest of the territory from the Arabs, probably in the 15th century. However, some historical sources suggest the intriguing possibility of an earlier Muslim construction, which would add further layers to its already rich history.

This tower was conceived with a clearly defensive character, a function reflected in the remarkable scarcity of windows or openings facing the outside, designed to maximise its protection. Its only access is strategically located inside the walls, through a small door with a slightly pointed voussoir arch. La Torreta has a prismatic shape with a quadrangular plan of approximately 5 metres per side. Its robust construction uses ashlar masonry at the base and corners, while the rest of the structure rises in rubble masonry, a testament to the building techniques of the time.

Beyond its defensive function and its impressive viewpoint, this medieval tower conceals a surprising secret inside. Can you imagine what it is? In the 19th century, taking advantage of its solid structure, this space was converted and used as the jail of Fuentespalda. Today, inside, the original shackles can still be found, silent witnesses to a dark and fascinating past.

La Torreta stands on Carrer Bonaire, which in former times formed a sentry path of the ancient walled precinct, offering privileged views. Throughout its long history, the tower underwent a partial demolition in the 18th century, although it was never completely destroyed. At the beginning of the 1990s, La Torreta was in a significant state of deterioration, having lost its roof and the floors of its three interior levels. For this reason, an ambitious restoration was undertaken that, respecting its original character, divided it into an additional floor and added a spectacular viewpoint at the top.

Today, La Torreta has been rehabilitated as a vibrant exhibition centre. The ground floor is dedicated to recalling its former use as a jail, while the upper floors host exhibitions related to Iberian culture and other artistic displays, blending history, art and culture in a single space.
