History and architecture
The parish church of Fuentespalda has its origins in the 14th century, under the authority of the archbishopric of Zaragoza. Its construction was initiated by Archbishop Pedro Lope de Luna, following the Gothic style of nearby churches such as those of Valderrobres and Torre del Compte.
Its current appearance is a fascinating blend of Gothic and Baroque elements, testament to the various construction phases that make it one of the most interesting monuments in the Matarraña region.
The distinctive Baroque doorway
In the 17th century, the church underwent major extensions and modifications in the Baroque style. The nave was extended, a transept with a dome was added, and the church was reoriented westwards, opening a new main doorway in the old apse. Have you noticed that the current doorway is set in a curved wall? That is precisely the reason for its peculiar position!
The magnificent historic organ of Fuentespalda
The church choir houses a magnificent organ built around 1680 and later reformed and enlarged in 1704 by Francisco Turull. The organ has a beautiful Baroque wooden case and was restored in 1993. Its impressive sound can be enjoyed during festivities and important religious events. Every year, the organ cycle of the Comarca del Matarraña/Matarranya is organised, in which this organ participates, together with that of Monroyo.
