Hermitage of Santa Bárbara

The hermitage of Santa Bárbara in Fuentespalda stands as a remarkable Baroque gem within the Matarraña region. Its unique Latin cross floor plan is distinguished by the incorporation of two semicircular apses and a rectangle in the arms of the cross, culminating in an unusual trefoil shape that defines the main nave and the arms of the transept.

At the heart of the hermitage, the crossing is crowned by a large dome on pendentives, whose majesty projects outward in a square-plan lantern tower. The construction, robust and traditional, employs rubble masonry with ashlar stone meticulously worked at the corners and openings, a testament to the building craftsmanship of the era.

The doorway of the hermitage, with its simple design, features an elegant round arch that invites visitors inside. A delicately carved oculus adorns the arm of the transept, adding a distinctive touch to the facade.

The interior of the hermitage is visually unified by stucco mouldings that run along the upper part of the walls, resting on four decorated pilasters that enhance the solemnity of the space. The presbytery is particularly notable for its rich polychrome and gilded stucco decoration, a style that extends to the dome of the crossing and the arms of the nave, creating an atmosphere of great artistic beauty. A simple yet venerated image of Santa Bárbara presides over the space, providing a focal point of devotion.

Strategically located near the cemetery and the road leading to Peñarroya de Tastavins, the hermitage is a local landmark. The dome of the crossing is topped externally with a wrought-iron weather vane cross, which crowns the building. The outer access opening is framed by elegant mouldings, and a wrought-iron bell tower rises at the eaves of the roof, announcing its presence.

The hermitage of Santa Bárbara is the focal point of the celebrations in honour of its patron saint, hosting Mass on the Sunday following her feast day, 4 December. Recent restoration and consolidation works have ensured the preservation of this beautiful place of worship and its valuable historic heritage for future generations.
