Medieval cemetery of Fuentespalda

Fuentespalda is home to a collection of medieval disc-shaped grave markers (estelas discoidales) set into the walls of the old cemetery beside the parish church. Despite being one of the most remarkable collections of its kind in the Province of Teruel, these markers often go unnoticed and do not receive the recognition they deserve.

In total, there are fourteen disc-shaped grave markers in Fuentespalda, characterised by their keyhole or disc shape, with a shaft that would be driven into the ground at the head of the graves.

Most of these markers are decorated on both sides, with a common design on the obverse featuring a cross inscribed within a simple circular border. On the reverse, interlace decorations appear, also within a simple circular border. Crosses are a prominent Christian symbol and are depicted in various artistic forms, while interlace patterns are symbols of immortality with roots predating Christianity.

Among the decorations on these markers, it is possible to distinguish different headwear, including a royal crown, two mitres and a biretta. The presence of these ornaments suggests that some markers may have belonged to local priests, as such headwear is common among ministers of the church.

However, in one particular case, the combination of a mitre with stonemason's tools could indicate an additional decorative motif or the representation of a craftsman, rather than a strictly religious affiliation. These details add a layer of mystery and richness to the interpretation of each piece, making each marker a fascinating enigma.
