Viewpoint of La Fresneda: a window onto the Matarraña region

The viewpoint of La Fresneda stands majestically above the remains of an ancient tower, part of the Order of Calatrava castle that once dominated these lands. This site, steeped in history, today offers a privileged balcony overlooking the surrounding landscape.

From this strategic vantage point, visitors can enjoy the observation of the vestiges of the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, a silent witness to the passage of time. But the real treasure lies in the panoramic views that open before the eyes: the picturesque silhouette of La Fresneda, with its ochre rooftops and traditional architecture, and a vast expanse of the Comarca del Matarraña, a mosaic of olive trees, almond trees and pine forests.

Castle-fortress of Arab origin.

Remains of the tower and walled precinct belonging to the old castle are preserved, which served for centuries as the usual residence of the commander. Surviving elements include the remains of a square rubble masonry block belonging to the keep, which was accessed by a spiral staircase, an ashlar masonry corner and a brick window in one of the curtain walls. The plan is C-shaped; the first floor, intended as residential quarters, would have had a cloister. On the main facade, the doorway preserves a coat of arms of the Order of Calatrava and of various commanders. The entire complex would have been crowned with battlements.
