Hermitage of Santa Bárbara in La Fresneda

The hermitage of Santa Bárbara, built in the 17th century on a hill running parallel to the former castle of La Fresneda, has a fascinating and rich history. As early as 1685, a brotherhood (cofradía) was founded under its patronage, whose members pledged to support one another in times of illness and to attend the funerals of their deceased brothers.

In 1760, the hermitage underwent a significant reconstruction under the auspices of the town hall, being transformed into a more elaborate chapel with a transept, dome and choir, reflecting its growing religious importance.

Despite its primarily religious function, its strategic geographical position made it a key point. During the turbulent Carlist Wars, the hermitage was used as a defensive military stronghold, suffering considerable damage and being left almost entirely destroyed. This dual use — both spiritual and military — underlines the significance of its location.
